Recovery

What exactly does that mean, Family in recovery? I keep thinking I am a member of a family in recovery but does that even apply to a family who is still suffering active addiction? Can a family be "in recovery" if the addicted family member isn't? An addict gets to choose when they enter recovery, does a family get to make that choice too?

Shut Up & Listen!!!!

This Ted Talks really puts "listening" into perspective. When we have a family member who is suffering from addiction we are usually very busy trying to help our loved one, trying to save them from pain, trying to tell them what they should do and what they shouldn't do. If you are like me, then you will quickly learn that we can't make someone do something they do wan't to do, nor should we try. Recovery from addiction has to be the decision of the addict, they must be the one to choose, as hard as we may try to convince them, ultimately, they need to WANT to change. We can try to give them the education and the choices and opportunities but they need to decide what they want, how they want their life to unfold.
Please watch Ernesto Sirolli's talk, he has something very powerful to say.

Ernesto Sirolli: Want to help someone? Shut up and listen

Food For Thought

A quote from my favorite author and life coach Robin Sharma. "Turbulent times build great leaders." If every addict could only realize that there could be great opportunity and growth through the crisis of addiction, if only to gather those strengths and the drive of the addict and use it for good.......

Families recovering from Teen addiction

I am creating this blog in hopes to reach other families suffering form the pain of substance abuse within their family. My family has been struggling for the past few years with my teenage son's addiction to drugs. I have decided to take the most painful event of my life and create an opportunity for growth. I am changing the direction of my career to help other families deal with this debilitating disease of addiction and am in the process of studying and preparing to launch a program for holistic recovery and relapse prevention for teens and their families.

I am in the process of becoming a Life Coach and will use these skills to work as a recovery coach for youth recovering form addictions and their families, as well as trying to encourage youth with active addiction to see their strengths and the path to overcome their addiction. I will also be educating parents and youth on drug use and coach families through treatment and through the fragile time of recovery.

For today I leave you with this quote from Robin Sharma "See the best in people who have never seen the best in themselves!"
